    Key Takeaways:

  • Manchester United are interested in signing City midfielder James McAtee, who has one year left on his contract
  • McAtee is looking for more playing time next season, while Guardiola plans to sign another attacking midfielder
  • United manager Ruben Amorim eyes a midfield rebuild with Casemiro and Eriksen expected to depart

Manchester United may make a move for Manchester City’s talented midfielder James McAtee. The 22-year-old Englishman has impressed with his performances for the Citizens following his return to the Etihad, having previously spent two seasons on loan at Sheffield United. So far this season, McAtee has scored seven goals in 25 appearances across all competitions.

McAtee’s contract with City runs for one more year, but the midfielder is seeking guarantees for increased playing time next season. This situation could result in a summer exit. Pep Guardiola is a known admirer of McAtee’s abilities, but is unlikely to provide more minutes for the youngster. In fact, competition in midfield is set to grow as Guardiola is reportedly targeting another attacking midfielder ahead of next season. Morgan Gibbs-White and Florian Wirtz are among the names being linked with a move to City. Such signings could further reduce McAtee’s hopes of playing more, even in the event of Kevin De Bruyne’s departure.

On the other side of Manchester, United manager Ruben Amorim is planning a major squad overhaul. With Casemiro and Christian Eriksen set to leave the club, the midfield is expected to undergo a significant transformation, and young blood like McAtee would be welcomed in the rebuild.

If McAtee were to join Manchester United, he would become the 15th player in history to play for both senior teams in the city. However, the Red Devils will not be alone in the race for his signature. Bayer Leverkusen, Newcastle, Milan, and Nottingham Forest are all closely monitoring McAtee’s situation at Manchester City.
