No goals and little spark as Manchester derby ends in a draw

Casemiro battles for the ball with Rico Lewiss during the Manchester derby between United and City

    Key Takeaways:

  • City had more possession, but United created the better chances
  • Both goalkeepers impressed in a match short on goalscoring action
  • The draw helps United build confidence ahead of their Europa League quarter-final

Manchester United and Manchester City finished in a goalless 0:0 draw in a match from Round 31 of the Premier League. The two teams played out a relatively cautious game in which Pep Guardiola’s side had the majority of possession, but it was the Red Devils who created more and better chances, although none resulted in a goal. The performance of both goalkeepers also deserves credit, as they dealt confidently with the few situations that required intervention.

The result is arguably a slightly worse outcome for City, who are still in the thick of the fight for a Champions League spot. For Ruben Amorim’s side, however, the draw against a considerably more successful opponent could be seen as a positive, especially ahead of their first-leg Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon next week.

As a result, the two Manchester clubs shared the points. City remain in fifth place with 52 points, one behind fourth-placed Chelsea and chased closely by Aston Villa, who are also just one point behind. Manchester United sit 13th with 38 points, and their only realistic hope of salvaging their season lies in potentially winning the Europa League.
