    Key Takeaways:

  • Barcelona secure their ninth consecutive La Liga win and remain top with 66 points
  • Robert Lewandowski shines with a brace, including an acrobatic finish
  • Girona’s resistance ends after three straight games without losing to Barca

Barcelona recorded their ninth consecutive La Liga victory yesterday, this time with a 4:1 win over Catalan neighbours Girona. Barca’s excellent run in the league continues and, unsurprisingly, Hansi Flick’s team sits at the top with 66 points — three ahead of Real Madrid and now nine clear of Atletico, who seem to be dropping out of the title race.

In recent years, modest Girona had proven to be one of Barcelona’s toughest opponents in the league, with this 4:1 result ending a three-game streak in which Barca had failed to beat their local rivals.

However, the league leaders needed a bit of luck to take the lead near the end of the first half. After a few missed opportunities from the home side, it was Ladislav Krejci who scored an own goal, giving Barcelona the advantage. Contrary to the flow of the game, Girona equalised right at the start of the second half through Arnaut Danjuma, but Hansi Flick’s players were quick to respond and retake control.

The star of the night was Robert Lewandowski. With an acrobatic strike, he once again put Barcelona ahead and then added a second goal 15 minutes from time to make it 3:1, effectively deciding the match. There was still time for Ferran Torres to add a fourth, rounding off the scoreline and sealing Barcelona’s ninth straight La Liga win.
