    Key Takeaways:

  • Bayern Munich secured a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round of 16 first leg
  • Harry Kane scored twice, reaching 47 goal involvements in the competition, equalling Wayne Rooney
  • Leverkusen’s winless streak against Bayern ended at six matches, and they finished with ten men

Bayern Munich got sweet revenge and secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their all-German Champions League round of 16 clash. Harry Kane scored twice for the Bavarians (9′, 75′), while Jamal Musiala added another goal in the 54th minute. With the win, Bayern ended their winless run against Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, having failed to beat them in the previous six encounters. Kane, who equalled Wayne Rooney’s tally of 47 goal involvements (37 goals, 10 assists) in the Champions League, played a key role in the result. Among English players, only David Beckham has more with 52.

The victory for Vincent Kompany’s side was fully deserved and could have been even more emphatic, as they missed several other chances. Winter signing Jonas Urbig, brought in from Köln, made his debut for Bayern after replacing the injured Manuel Neuer in the second half. In the 62nd minute, Bayer were reduced to ten men after Nordi Mukiele received a second yellow card. In the final moments, substitute Joao Palhinha also missed a chance, hitting the crossbar following a brilliant dribble and assist from Musiala. Bayern ultimately celebrated a convincing and well-deserved victory. Bayern now await the second leg calmly, while Leverkusen will need nothing short of a miracle to overturn the deficit.
