Liverpool extend winning streak to seven with commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester City

Liverpool secured their seventh consecutive win with a dominant 2-0 triumph over Manchester City at Anfield. Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 12th minute, while Mohamed Salah sealed the outcome with a penalty in the 78th minute. The victory follows Liverpool’s midweek success against Real Madrid, marking an exceptional week where they defeated both the reigning Champions League and Premier League titleholders.

The Reds controlled the game, creating numerous chances and preventing City from mounting any serious threat. Slot praised his team’s effort, stating, “We are a very competitive team and it is difficult to beat us. But we have to put the effort in, and the players are doing that.”

Liverpool now sits 11 points ahead of Manchester City, who have dropped to fifth in the standings. City’s struggles continue as they remain winless in their last seven matches across all competitions, losing six of those games. Reflecting on his team’s poor form, Pep Guardiola acknowledged the pressure, saying, “Maybe I deserve to be sacked, honestly, with our results, or maybe I’m still in the job because I won six Premier Leagues and a lot of titles!” Guardiola also responded to chants of “sacked in the morning” from Liverpool fans by holding up six fingers to signify his league titles with City.

Slot, reflecting on Liverpool’s remarkable form, added, “I don’t think anyone, including me, would have predicted this start.” Liverpool’s continued dominance keeps them at the top of the league opening a 9-point cushion over their closest challengers – Arsenal and Chelsea.
