Juan Mata has become the first active professional footballer to own a stake in a Major League Soccer (MLS) team, joining San Diego FC’s ownership group. The announcement marks a groundbreaking moment in football history, as Mata combines his on-field career with a role in club ownership.
San Diego FC officially welcomed Mata to their ownership group, emphasizing his accolades as a World Cup, Euro, and UEFA Champions League winner. The club described the addition as a significant milestone for their franchise and the league.

Mata also expressed his excitement about the venture, stating, “I’m joining San Diego FC ownership group! Really happy to announce that I’m a partner at the newest and most special franchise in the MLS.” He also acknowledged the ownership group, Right to Dream, and MLS for enabling him to achieve this unique honour.
The 36 year old Spanish midfielder is currently part of Australian side Western Sydney Wanderers, which he joined in September. Throughout the 2024/25 season Mata has featured in four matches for the team, accumulating 141 minutes of playing time.
San Diego FC is set to debut in MLS as the league’s newest franchise, and Mata’s involvement brings additional spotlight and experience to the organization. His historic ownership move follows David Beckham, who became part-owner of Inter Miami CF but only after retiring from professional football.
