Julian Alvarez expresses gratitute towards Guardiola and hopes Messi to be part of Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad

Julian Alvarez recently opened up about his move to Atletico Madrid, explaining his desire for a fresh chapter in his career. The Argentine forward, who left Manchester City after two successful years, spoke about the reasons behind his decision: “I felt that I needed a change in my football career, a new challenge. This was the best option, what I wanted.”

Alvarez credited Diego Simeone and his new Atletico teammates for helping him make the decision. “The decision was about trying to find my best version as a footballer to help the team. And well, after the talks I had with teammates, with Cholo, they gave me the confidence for what I was feeling, so we’re on that path.”

Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Alvarez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play under Pep Guardiola. “I spoke with Pep and I thanked him for the two years, for the trust, for how he treated me, for everything I learned, and for everything I experienced” Alvarez said. “He also thanked me because it had been two incredible years. He asked me that if I have a chance, it would be nice to visit the club because it would mean a lot to everyone.”

Alvarez also shared his thoughts on Lionel Messi’s potential involvement in the 2026 World Cup, believing that it ultimately depends on Messi’s physical condition and desire to continue. “Yes, I think it depends on him. If he feels physically good and still has the desire, feels he can contribute, and wants to be there, then perfect. I think yes.”

Additionally, Alvarez praised Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni for his honesty with the players during the 2022 World Cup campaign. He recounted how Scaloni spoke openly with him and Lautaro Martínez about their roles on the team: “He told us who was going to play depending on the match, and what he felt. That sincerity is something very valuable because you don’t often see that.”
