Lamine Yamal talks on Messi comparisons, Nico Williams, and racism in football

Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s young star, shared his thoughts on comparisons to Lionel Messi, his friendship with Nico Williams, and his ambitions at Barca in an interview with El Hormiguero. When asked about being likened to Messi, Yamal said, “I like being compared to the best in history, Leo Messi, but I want to be Lamine Yamal and reaching Messi’s level is impossible.”

He acknowledged the comparisons while making it clear that his goal is to forge his own path. Yamal also spoke about his desire to play alongside his good friend Nico Williams, saying, “I’d love to play every week with Nico Williams as part of my squad! He’s my good friend.” However, he remained neutral on the possibility of the Athletic Bilbao winger joining Barcelona next season, stating, “I don’t know if he will join Barça next season, it’s up to Nico.” On the issue of racism, Yamal was direct, “It’s not worth saying anything. I have nothing to respond to. We know our values, and it’s not worth it” showing his willingness to focus on the game rather than engaging with negativity.

Yamal also expressed his deep connection to the club, saying, “I never want to leave Barça. I want to become a legend of this club.” The 17-year old prodigy has already recorded 1 goal and 4 assists in just 4 games for Barcelona since the beginning of the 2024/25 season.
