Barcelona suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to AS Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy final, marking a rare and disappointing result in the club’s history. This loss is the first time since 1981 that Barcelona has been defeated by a margin of at least three goals without scoring in this prestigious pre-season match.

Before the match, Barcelona players proudly presented their Euro 2024 and Olympic gold medals to the home crowd. However, the celebration quickly turned sour as the game progressed.
The game at Montjuic saw a frustrated home crowd booing the team after Monaco’s second goal, showing the dissatisfaction with the performance. All three of Monaco’s goals came in the second half. Lamine Camara opened the scoring in the 50th minute, followed by Breel Embolo’s strike seven minutes later. Christian Mawissa Elebi sealed the win with a goal in the 86th minute.
After the match, Barcelona former defender Gerard Piqué expressed his disappointment, particularly for the young players who were given a chance in the squad. “The result is a shame because for many of the youth team players it was their first game here. On the USA tour they achieved good results and have shown that they can play in the first team” Piqué said, reflecting on the mixed emotions of the night.
Hansi Flick, acknowledging the poor performance, remained optimistic about the team’s potential to bounce back. “I know what the team is capable of. Today was not our game. We will play differently in Valencia. I am sure we will do better,” Flick stated, focusing on their upcoming La Liga opener in five days.
