Gareth Southgate has announced that he is stepping down from his role as manager of the England national team after nearly eight years in charge. During his tenure, Southgate revitalized the Three Lions and led them to some of their most successful international campaigns in recent history.

Reflecting on his decision, Southgate stated, “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role.”
Southgate’s tenure stands in stark contrast to the period before his appointment. Pre-Southgate, England’s performance in major tournaments was inconsistent at best, after being eliminated at the following stages: Last-16 in 2010; Quarter-finals in 2012; Group stage in 2014; Last-16 in 2016
Under Southgate’s guidance, England achieved remarkable progress: Semi-finals in 2018; Final in 2020; Quarter-finals in 2022, and the recent 2024 final. Southgate’s tactical acumen and ability to nurture young talent have been key to England’s resurgence on the international stage. His leadership saw the team adopt a more cohesive and disciplined approach, which translated into notable success.
Despite his achievements, the decision to step down comes after England’s recent journey to the final of Euro 2024, where they fell short against Spain. The Three Lions’ performance under Southgate has been a mix of tactical discipline and moments of brilliance, yet often criticized for a perceived lack of offensive dynamism and flair. Southgate’s era was marked by a preference for a measured build-up play, which sometimes led to criticism about the team’s inability to penetrate defences swiftly.
Southgate leaves behind a legacy of progress and stability, setting a high bar for his successor. As England prepares for a new chapter, the contributions of Gareth Southgate will be remembered as an important period of growth but he will not be the one who brings football home
