“I don’t think it’s a good moment to decide these things.” Southgate commented when asked about his future. “I need to have those conversations with important people behind the scenes. I’m not going to discuss that publicly first.”
England’s performance at Euro 2024 has been watched with mixed emotions. The Three Lions reached the final for the second consecutive time under Southgate’s leadership. Despite the loss to Spain, England demonstrated their capability to compete at the highest level, with Southgate becoming the first manager in history to go 13 matches in a row without defeat at the Euros.
Following the final, FA’s CEO Mark Bullingham expressed his support and gratitude towards the team. “We came to Germany to win the tournament, and we didn’t want it to end this way. We are all hurting tonight, but we should be incredibly proud. I would like to thank Gareth, Steve, all of the players, and the support team for their huge commitment and hard work to try to win the trophy for the country. They will be more disappointed than anyone to fall just short.”
However, critics have pointed out that England’s style under Southgate seemed overly cautious at times, relying more on defensive solidity and less on offensive creativity.
