Victor Wembanyama unanimously wins NBA’s Rookie of the Year award

Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs has unanimously won the NBA Rookie of the Year award. The 20-year-old French center became the first player since Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns in 2016 to be unanimously voted as winner, receiving all 99 votes from the media panel. Wemby had a historic season, registering averages of 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per game. He also became the first player in NBA history to accumulate over 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks, and 100 three-pointers in a single season.

By winning the award, Wembanyama joins San Antonio Spurs legends Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the only franchise players to have won the Rookie of the Year title. The team’s fans will undoubtedly be eager to see whether Wemby can replicate what Duncan and Robinson achieved in the later stages of their careers—leading the organization to multiple NBA titles. The Spurs had a disappointing 2023/24 season and missed the playoffs, finishing in 14th place in the Western Conference with a 22-60 record.
