Portugal defeat Sweden to extend their perfect record with Martinez at the helm to 11 straight wins

Last night, Roberto Martinez guided Portugal to a 5-2 victory over Sweden in a friendly match. In the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo the goals came from five different players, with Rafael Leao opening the score in the 24th minute. His goal was followed by strikes from Matheus Nunes, Bruno Fernandes, Bruma, and Goncalo Ramos, which only comes to show the depth and versatility of the squad.

It was the 11th victory in as many matches for the 50-year-old Spanish specialist since taking over in January 2023, after Portugal crashed out of the 2022 World Cup at the quarter-finals stage. The team’s performance has been quite impressive, qualifying for Euro 2024 as 1st in their group, achieving 11 wins in 11 games, securing 9 clean sheets, and boasting an impressive goal difference with 41 scored and only 4 conceded for the period.

Portugal is preparing to leave a mark at the upcoming Euro 2024, beginning in June. The team has been drawn in Group F alongside Turkey, the Czech Republic, and one of Greece or Georgia. In the run-up to the tournament, Portugal is scheduled to play another 4 friendlies, the next of which against Slovenia on Tuesday. Martinez’s perfect record so far paints a promising picture for Portugal’s campaign at Euro 2024, with expectations high for the team to continue their winning streak and aim for a repeat of 2016 when they went on to win the trophy.
