In an attempt to further solidify their defensive lineup, Atletico Madrid have successfully extended the contracts of two key defenders, Stefan Savic and Cesar Azpilicueta, ensuring their stay at the club until June 2025.
Stefan Savic, the 33-year-old Montenegrin center-back, has had his contract automatically extended due to a clause in his deal with the club. Having been a part of Atletico Madrid since his transfer from Fiorentina in 2015, Savic has become a cornerstone of the team’s defense. With 288 appearances across all competitions, his contribution has been pivotal to Atletico’s success over the years. Initially set to expire at the end of the current season, Savic’s contract extension is a testament to his importance to the team.

Cesar Azpilicueta, aged 34, has also seen his contract with Atletico Madrid extended for an additional season, keeping him at the club until June 2025. The former Chelsea defender joined Atletico on a free transfer last summer and has quickly adapted to life in Madrid, featuring in 22 games in all competitions so far. Known for his versatility and leadership, Azpilicueta’s extension was eagerly pursued by Atletico, with reports from Marca confirming the deal as signed and sealed.
Atletico currently sits in 4th position in LaLiga with 55 points, 5 ahead of Athletic Bilbao but 11 behind league leaders Real Madrid. Diego Simeone’s team will come up against Inter next week in Madrid for the 2nd leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash, with Atleti trailing 1:0 after the first match.
