Bologna advance to first Coppa Italia final in 51 years with 2-1 win over Empoli

Thijs Dallinga scores Bologna 2nd goal against Empoli

    Key takeaways:

  • Bologna reached their first Coppa Italia final since 1974 with a 5–1 aggregate win over Empoli
  • Giovanni Fabbian and Thijs Dallinga scored in the second leg to seal Bologna’s place in the final
  • Empoli’s goal was the first Bologna conceded in the tournament this season

Bologna’s dream season continues. After beginning the campaign with a Champions League appearance, Vincenzo Italiano’s side will now also play in the Coppa Italia final. They secured their place with another win over Empoli in the semifinal second leg, following up their dominant 3–0 first-leg victory for a 5–1 aggregate result.

The hosts took the lead early at the Renato Dall’Ara stadium. In the 7th minute, Nicolo Moro delivered an accurate cross to Giovanni Fabbian, who powered a header past Jacopo Seghetti to make it 1–0. Empoli responded in the 33rd minute with a goal from Viktor Kovalenko. After pouncing on a loose ball in the box, he slotted it low into the net – marking the first goal Bologna had conceded in this year’s Coppa Italia campaign.

Seghetti prevented Fabbian from doubling his tally in the 58th minute, stopping a shot from the edge of the box. Fifteen minutes from time, Benjamin Dominguez found himself unmarked in the area, but his strike flashed narrowly wide of the target. Bologna wrapped up the win in the 87th minute, when Thijs Dallinga converted a pinpoint cross from Charalampos Lykogiannis.

The final is set for May 14 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Bologna will face Milan, who eliminated city rivals Inter with a 4–1 aggregate score.

For Milan, it will be their first Coppa Italia final since 2018, while Bologna return to the showpiece for the first time since 1974. The Rossoneri haven’t lifted the trophy since 2003, while the Rossoblù are chasing a historic triumph half a century in the making.
