Angel Di Maria weighs return to Argentina with Rosario amid safety concerns

Legendary Argentinian winger Angel di Maria

    Key Takeaways:

  • Angel Di Maria is seriously considering a return to Rosario Central after his contract with Benfica ends in June
  • The 37-year-old’s family was previously threatened by individuals tied to Newell’s Old Boys ultras and drug trafficking
  • Di Maria is evaluating safety measures such as armoured vehicles and 24-hour security if he moves back to Argentina

Angel Di Maria is considering a return to his boyhood club Rosario Central after his contract with Benfica expires at the end of June. The Argentine side, where the veteran winger began his professional career and from which he moved to the Lisbon giants in 2007 for around 8 million euro, is once again actively pursuing him. According to A BOLA, this possibility is being taken seriously. Benfica president Rui Costa is aware of the developments and plans to speak with the 37-year-old World Cup winner before the season ends.

Di Maria’s heart beats strongly at the thought of returning to Rosario – the city where he was born and where he took his first steps on the path to becoming one of international football’s leading figures. The move did not happen last summer because the player’s family was threatened by individuals associated with the ultras of Newell’s Old Boys, Rosario Central’s city rivals, and with drug trafficking.

This ongoing uncertainty continues to concern the experienced footballer, who is now evaluating the best measures to ensure the safety of his family if he returns. This would likely include living in a gated compound, using armoured vehicles for his family – especially for his wife and two daughters – and relying on round-the-clock security. Several of his closest friends have warned him about the dangers stemming from these threats.
