Barcelona seal narrow win over Mallorca ahead of El Clasico showdown

Barcelona player shoots towards Mallorca net

    Key Takeaways:

  • Barcelona beat Mallorca 1–0 at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys after 40 total shots and a dominant display
  • Dani Olmo scored the only goal seconds into the second half after Leo Román’s first-half heroics
  • Barça rotated key players ahead of El Clásico, giving rare starts to Ansu Fati and Héctor Fort

Barcelona edged out Mallorca with a narrow 1–0 home win in Matchday 33 of La Liga, moving seven points clear of Real Madrid ahead of Los Blancos’ clash with Getafe on Wednesday night. The result at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys was surprising, considering the Catalans had 40 shots, yet only one found the net. Dani Olmo (46’) scored the decisive goal with the first attack of the second half, while Mallorca’s goalkeeper Leo Román produced a sensational performance, stopping everything else that came his way.

With El Clásico on the horizon, Barça head coach Flick opted to rest Raphinha, Cubarsí, Koundé, and Frenkie de Jong, while Robert Lewandowski was sidelined due to injury. As a result, Ansu Fati and Héctor Fort earned rare starts. Both had recently expressed frustration during the game against Celta—Fati kicked objects near the bench after being left out, and Fort refused to shake the coach’s hand. Ferran Torres, who was also upset after being substituted in that game, featured in the starting lineup this time.

Mallorca started brighter than expected, creating two or three dangerous attacks in the opening minutes. The hosts replied with long-range efforts from Lamine Yamal. In the 12th minute, Barcelona came close when Ferran and Yamal forced back-to-back saves from Leo Román. Yamal again stood out in the 26th with a signature pass to Olmo, who found himself one-on-one but couldn’t beat the goalkeeper.

Against the run of play, Mateu Morey scored for Mallorca in the 44th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The first half ended goalless, but seconds into the second half Dani Olmo finally broke through to make it 1–0.

Mallorca nearly equalised in the 55th minute through Antonio Raíllo, who failed to hit the target after a free kick delivery. After the 65th minute, the visitors started pushing closer to Wojciech Szczęsny’s goal as Barça dropped back slightly. That didn’t last long, and the hosts regained momentum in the latter stages. In the 79th minute, Yamal had a golden chance to double the lead, but once again Román pulled off a superb save. Mallorca couldn’t threaten further in the final stretch, and Barcelona held on for a hard-earned win.
