Raphinha chasing Serhou Guirassy

    Key Takeaways:

  • Barcelona lost 1–3 to Borussia Dortmund in one of their weakest performances of the season but advanced to the Champions League semifinals with a 5–3 aggregate win
  • Serhou Guirassy scored a memorable hat-trick for Dortmund, becoming the first African player to do so against Barça
  • The result ended Barcelona’s 24-match unbeaten run and marked their first loss in 2025 under Hansi Flick

Barcelona played one of their weakest matches of the season and lost 1–3 away to Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal, but with a 5–3 aggregate score, they move on to the semifinals, where they will face either Inter or Bayern Munich. The Catalans did not approach the match with much seriousness and were completely outplayed by their opponent. Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy scored a memorable hat-trick for the Black and Yellows (11′ – penalty, 49′, 76′). Barça managed to pull one goal back through an own goal by Ramy Bensebaini in the 54th minute.

This result ended Hansi Flick’s impressive 24-game unbeaten streak across all competitions and marked the team’s first defeat of 2025. The Catalans were especially poor in the first half and were only spared a heavier loss thanks to some excellent saves from Wojciech Szczęsny. Nevertheless, they return to the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time in six years, their last appearance coming in 2019.

Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, exit the tournament with heads held high, regretting only the heavy 4-0 defeat in the first leg. The German side claimed their first-ever official victory over Barcelona—on their seventh attempt. This match will also be unforgettable for Serhou Guirassy, who broke multiple personal records. He became the first African player to score a hat-trick against Barça and now has five goals against them in this edition of the competition. Guirassy also became the highest-scoring player for Dortmund in a single Champions League campaign with 13 goals, surpassing stars like Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland. He currently leads the tournament’s scoring charts.
