Key Takeaways:
Inter secured an important and dramatic 2–1 away win over Bayern Munich in the first leg of what may be the most exciting and evenly matched Champions League quarter-final. Lautaro Martínez scored in the 38th minute for the Nerazzurri, but legendary Bayern substitute Thomas Müller equalised in the 85th. Just three minutes later, another substitute – Davide Frattesi – gave Inter the win, silencing the Allianz Arena. The result ended Bayern’s unbeaten home streak in the tournament, which had lasted 22 games (17 wins and 5 draws).

The Nerazzurri played very organised and calmly, although in the first 30 minutes Bayern were clearly the better side and missed several chances, including a shot against the post by Harry Kane. Gradually, Simone Inzaghi’s team settled and found their rhythm, while the Bavarians stopped creating serious danger in front of the well-positioned Yann Sommer. One of the talking points remains Bayern coach Vincent Kompany’s decision to start Raphael Guerreiro as an attacking midfielder in place of the injured Jamal Musiala instead of veteran Thomas Müller, who scored minutes after coming on. In any case, the tie remains open. The winner will face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.
The first real chance came for Bayern in the 6th minute when Michael Olise fired a dangerous shot from the edge of the box, narrowly missing Sommer’s goal. The visitors responded five minutes later with a thunderous strike from Hakan Çalhanoğlu, which was fortunately blocked for the Bavarians. In the 14th minute came the first shot on target – Olise crossed to Harry Kane, but the Inter keeper saved easily. The lively French winger tried another long-range effort, which Sommer also caught. Further saves were needed from the Swiss keeper after shots by Guerreiro and Olise.
In the 26th minute came Bayern’s best chance up to that point. Olise played Kane through into a great position, but the England captain hit the outside of the right post. Five minutes later came Inter’s first real opportunity. Alessandro Bastoni made a brilliant run and found Carlos Augusto on the left, but his shot only found the side netting of Urbig’s goal. As Bayern’s pressure faded, Inter struck in the 38th minute. Augusto again joined the attack down the left and crossed to Marcus Thuram. The Frenchman cleverly backheeled the ball to Lautaro, who finished superbly with one touch – 0–1 Inter. That remained the score at half-time.

The second half started again with Inter playing better and looking more dangerous. In the 55th minute, Urbig had to stop a dangerous shot from Martínez, who was again set up by Thuram. Seven minutes later came Bayern’s first chance of the half, when Konrad Laimer crossed to Josip Stanišić, but the Croatian’s header went over Sommer’s goal. A few minutes later, the out-of-position Guerreiro attempted a long-range volley, which went just over Inter’s crossbar. In the 74th minute, Vincent Kompany made a triple change, bringing on Thomas Müller, Serge Gnabry, and Sacha Boey.
In the 80th minute, after one of Bayern’s few decent moves of the second half, Laimer found Kane, but the Englishman’s shot went wide. Soon after, a dangerous shot from Müller was blocked by Inter’s defence. When it seemed unlikely Bayern would equalise, they did in the 85th minute. After a long attack, Laimer delivered a perfect cross, and the legendary Müller tapped the ball in from close range – 1–1.
Just moments later, Kane tested Sommer again with a long-range effort, but the Swiss goalkeeper saved. Bayern’s joy was short-lived, though. Three minutes after the equaliser, Carlos Augusto led a quick counter-attack and picked out substitute Davide Frattesi, who smashed the ball past Urbig to restore Inter’s lead – 1–2.
Bayern responded with a desperate late push, with Kane again coming close, but his header was saved by Sommer. Inter held on to secure a valuable victory.
