US media have also revealed that general manager Calvin Booth will be leaving his post as well. For now, the team will be led by assistant coach David Adelman.
The 53-year-old Malone recorded a 471–327 record over his ten seasons with Denver, including 47–32 in the current campaign. The Nuggets lost four straight games and seven of their last ten, dropping to fourth place in the Western Conference.
Before joining Denver, Malone had a 39–67 record over parts of two seasons with the Sacramento Kings from 2013 to 2014. The 48-year-old Booth was appointed general manager in 2020 and has stepped down immediately.
