Romelu Lukaku scores Napoli's second goal against Milan

    Key Takeaways:

  • Napoli beat Milan 2:1 to remain three points behind leaders Inter in the Serie A title race
  • Matteo Politano and Romelu Lukaku scored early to put the hosts in control at the Diego Maradona
  • Milan responded in the second half but missed a penalty and only managed a late goal through Luka Jovic

Napoli passed one of their toughest remaining tests of the season, and the Scudetto dreams at the Diego Maradona Stadium are still alive. The Neapolitans defeated Milan 2:1, returning to winning ways and staying just three points behind leaders Inter.

Earlier in the day, the Nerazzurri had beaten Udinese 2:1, temporarily creating a six-point gap between two of the main contenders for the Serie A title. Napoli knew well that victory over Milan was the only option, and their determination was made clear with a goal in just the second minute. With their first real attack, the hosts took the lead through Matteo Politano, and before 20 minutes had passed, Romelu Lukaku doubled the advantage.

It was the perfect start against a Milan side in crisis. However, the visitors showed they wouldn’t go down without a fight and made Napoli sweat for the valuable win in the second half. Santiago Gimenez had the chance to bring Milan back into the match in the 69th minute but missed a penalty. Still, Milan deservedly pulled one back five minutes from time through Luka Jovic, setting up a tense finish.

Napoli, however, held on to their lead and secured a vital win that keeps them within three points of Inter at the top.
