Reece James scoring from free-kick against Latvia

    Key takeaways:

  • England defeated Latvia 3–0 at Wembley to make it two wins from two in World Cup 2026 qualifying
  • Reece James scored his first goal for England in his first start in two and a half years
  • The Three Lions extended their unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers to 33 matches

England expectedly defeated Latvia in their second home match under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel. At Wembley, the Three Lions secured a 3–0 win over the Baltic side to top their 2026 World Cup qualifying group with six points from two matches.

Although not particularly convincing, especially in the first half, England extended its unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers to 33 consecutive matches.

The hosts didn’t create many chances before the break, and the opener came from a set piece. Reece James, making his first start for the national team in two and a half years, scored in the 38th minute with a perfect free-kick from over 25 metres. It was also his first goal for England.

In the second half, the referee spared Jude Bellingham an obvious second yellow card for a challenge from behind on a Latvian player, and Harry Kane netted his routine goal in the national shirt. The captain tapped in at the far post after a cross from Declan Rice to make it 2–0 in the 68th minute. Seven minutes later, Eberechi Eze celebrated his debut goal for England, which came after a deflection off a defender.
