Juventus sack Thiago Motta as Igor Tudor takes charge for rest of the season

Former Juventus head coach Thiago Motta

    Key Takeaways:

  • Juventus part ways with Thiago Motta after a disappointing campaign
  • Igor Tudor appointed on a short-term contract, tasked with securing Champions League qualification
  • The Croatian becomes Juve’s first non-Italian head coach since Didier Deschamps in 2006/07

Thiago Motta is no longer head coach of Juventus, the club has confirmed. Igor Tudor takes over, returning to the club where he once played. Motta was appointed last summer but failed to raise the team’s level. Recent heavy defeats to Atalanta and Fiorentina left the side outside the Champions League zone — 12 points off the top.

Motta left with 18 wins, 16 draws and 8 losses in all competitions. In addition to the league struggles, Juve have already been knocked out of the Champions League, eliminated by Empoli in the Coppa Italia, and lost the Italian Super Cup final.

Tudor, who previously wore the black-and-white shirt, has signed a contract until the end of the season with an option for a 12-month extension. His mission is clear: qualify for the 2025/26 Champions League. He begins work immediately, with his first training session set for today and his debut coming in the upcoming match against Genoa on 29 March. The Croatian was assistant coach at Juventus in the 2020/21 season under Andrea Pirlo.

According to Italian media, Tudor was chosen for his readiness to accept a short-term deal. This gives Juve’s management flexibility to make a change in the summer if needed. Potential names for the long-term role include Antonio Conte, Gian Piero Gasperini and Stefano Pioli. Tudor has previously coached Hajduk Split, PAOK, Karabükspor, Galatasaray, Udinese, Verona, Marseille and briefly Lazio.

Tudor’s arrival marks the first time in 18 seasons that Juventus appoints a non-Italian manager. The previous one was Didier Deschamps in 2006/07.
