    Key Takeaways:

  • Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid is likely to host the 2027 Champions League final
  • Atletico Madrid is considering withdrawing the stadium from Spain’s 2030 World Cup host list
  • Financial concerns could cost Atletico up to €20 million if the venue is unavailable for events

Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid is likely to be chosen as the venue for the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, despite no official confirmation from UEFA yet. Reports from Qatari sports media group BEIN indicate that Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Rafael Luzzan has disclosed the decision regarding the tournament’s climactic match.

Atletico Madrid’s home ground reportedly outbid Baku, Azerbaijan, which was also in contention to host the final. If confirmed, this would mark the stadium’s second Champions League final, following the 2018/19 decider where Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-0.

This news emerged just a couple of days after reports suggested that the Metropolitano might be withdrawn from Spain’s list of venues for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. According to Relevo, Atletico Madrid’s majority shareholder, Miguel Angel Gil Marín, discussed the potential withdrawal with RFEF president Rafael Luzzan.

The Spanish Federation is now considering replacing the Metropolitano with the Nou Mestalla, Valencia’s unfinished stadium. Initially excluded from the bid, the venue could now be included following an agreement to restart construction work.

FIFA requires selected stadiums to be leased for over a month before the tournament and throughout its duration. In Atletico Madrid’s case, this could result in a significant financial setback. The club plans to utilize the Metropolitano for concerts and events during the summer, and losing access to the venue for such a long period could cost up to €20 million.
