Kylian Mbappe closing in on Real Madrid’s debut season goal record

Kylian Mbappe celebrates after scoring against Villarreal in La Liga

    Key Takeaways:

  • Kylian Mbappe has scored 31 goals in his debut season for Real Madrid, surpassing Ronaldo Nazario’s 30-goal tally
  • He is now chasing Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who both scored 33 goals in their first season at the club
  • Ivan Zamorano holds the record with 37 goals, which Mbappe has a chance to surpass before the end of the campaign

Kylian Mbappe is rediscovering his best form at Real Madrid. After some early struggles following his summer arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu, the French forward has regained his lethal touch in front of goal. After his brace in Los Blancos latest game against Villarreal, he has now scored 31 goals in all competitions, including 20 in La Liga, making him the fourth-highest scorer in a debut season for the club.

Mbappe has already overtaken one Real Madrid legend — Ronaldo Nazario. The Brazilian striker netted 30 goals in his first season at the club, a mark that the Frenchman has now eclipsed. His next target is the shared second place held by Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Both players recorded 33 goals in their debut campaigns — the Portuguese in 2009/10 and Van Nistelrooy in 2006/07.

The all-time record for most goals in a debut season at Real Madrid belongs to Ivan Zamorano, who scored 37 goals in 1992/93. With several matches still to play, Mbappe has a strong chance of breaking that 32-year-old milestone.

Despite the impressive goal totals of these players, history shows that their prolific debut seasons did not lead to Champions League success for Real Madrid. In fact, the club only managed to win La Liga in two of those seasons — when Ronaldo Nazario and Ruud van Nistelrooy arrived. Mbappe will be hoping to change that narrative by delivering both personal records and major trophies to the Bernabeu this season.
