Inter extend Serie A lead with solid win over Atalanta

Carlos Alberto opens the scoring for Inter against Atalanta

    Key Takeaways:

  • Inter defeated Atalanta 2-0 to extend their lead at the top of Serie A to six points
  • Carlos Augusto (55′) and Lautaro Martínez (87′) scored the goals, while both teams finished with 10 men
  • Simone Inzaghi now holds eight consecutive wins over Gian Piero Gasperini in their managerial head-to-head

Inter secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Atalanta in their Serie A clash on Sunday, further strengthening their grip on the top spot. After a goalless first half, the visitors capitalized on a defensive lapse, with Carlos Augusto opening the scoring in the 55th minute by converting a precise corner delivery. Atalanta struggled to respond, and their hopes of a comeback were dashed when Lautaro Martínez sealed the win in the 87th minute. The Argentine had found the net earlier, but his goal was ruled out for a foul.

The match saw disciplinary issues, with both teams finishing with 10 men. Ederson (Atalanta) and Alessandro Bastoni (Inter) received second yellow cards, while Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini was also sent off and watched the final minutes from the stands.

This was the third meeting between the two sides this season, with Inter maintaining complete dominance. Simone Inzaghi’s side had previously beaten Atalanta 4-0 in Serie A and 2-0 in the Italian Super Cup. Gasperini remains winless against Inter since Inzaghi took charge, with the Milan giants winning all eight encounters.

The result opened up a six-point lead for Inter at the top, while Atalanta remains winless at the Gewiss Stadium in 2025. Gasperini’s men missed the chance to tighten the title race, as Napoli dropped points earlier in the day with a 0-0 draw against Venezia. A victory for Atalanta would have left all three title contenders level on points.
