The reigning champions Real Madrid secured a place in the Champions League quarter-finals after eliminating Atletico Madrid in a dramatic penalty shootout. The second-leg clash at the Metropolitano Stadium ended 1-0 after 120 minutes, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2, following Real’s 2-1 home victory in the first leg.

The visitors took an early lead, with Conor Gallagher scoring within the opening 30 seconds. Despite dominating large parts of the match, Vinícius Júnior missed a penalty in the 70th minute, preventing Real from securing qualification in regular time.

With no goals in extra time, the tie was decided by a penalty shootout. Real Madrid converted four of their five attempts, while Atletico managed just two. A rare rule came into play when Julián Álvarez’s penalty was disallowed—the Argentine slipped while taking the shot and made contact with the ball using both feet, leading to its cancellation after a VAR review.

Marcos Llorente struck the post, while for Real, only Lucas Vázquez missed his attempt. The decisive penalty was taken by Antonio Rüdiger, whose shot was nearly saved by Jan Oblak. Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Federico Valverde also converted for Los Blancos, while Alexander Sørloth and Ángel Correa found the net for Atletico.
