Ligue 1 strengthens its grip on 5th position in UEFA rankings

PSG players celebrate after eliminating Liverpool

    Key Takeaways:

  • Paris Saint-Germain’s elimination of Liverpool has all but secured Ligue 1’s fifth-place ranking in UEFA’s coefficient standings
  • France is set to keep three direct spots in the Champions League group stage and one additional qualifying berth for the 2026/27 season
  • Lille and Lyon still have opportunities to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League and Europa League, respectively

Paris Saint-Germain’s impressive performance against Liverpool in the Champions League round of 16 has all but guaranteed Ligue 1’s retention of its fifth-place ranking in UEFA’s coefficient standings. This was further aided by Feyenoord’s elimination at the hands of Inter and Arsenal’s dominant 7-1 first-leg victory over PSV Eindhoven, which makes the Dutch club’s exit highly likely. As a result, the French top flight is set to keep its position in the rankings, ensuring three direct spots in the Champions League and one additional place through two qualifying rounds for the 2026/27 season.

Ligue 1 clubs still have the opportunity to send a second team to the Champions League quarter-finals, as Lille held Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. Lyon could also reach the same stage in the Europa League after securing a 3-1 victory over FCSB in their first-leg encounter.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands still has two teams in the European competitions, but they could face each other if both progress. Ajax must overturn a 2-1 home defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt, while AZ Alkmaar will look to hold onto their 1-0 first-leg lead over Tottenham.
