Defending champions Real Madrid overcame Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. Rodrygo opened the scoring for the hosts after just four minutes, but Julián Álvarez equalised in the 32nd minute. In the 55th minute, Brahim Díaz restored Real Madrid’s lead with a goal that proved to be the winner.

Real Madrid’s captain Federico Valverde was under question before kick-off, but the Uruguayan was trusted to start, recording his 300th game in Los Blancos shirt and it was his precise pass that led to Rodrygo’s goal.

The match developed into a tactical battle, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side ultimately prevailing, although Real Madrid were under pressure for long periods, particularly before the break. After conceding early, Atlético responded calmly and gained control, eventually equalising. Their strong play continued into the second half, but Brahim Díaz’s precise finish changed the course of the game. After regaining the lead, Real Madrid played intelligently and controlled the closing stages, with Atlético unable to create any pressure.

The second leg will take place next Wednesday (12 March), with the winner set to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals. The Gunners secured their place with a 7-1 away victory over PSV Eindhoven, making the return leg unnecessary.
