Martin Odegaard celebrates after scoring against PSV in the Champions League

    Key Takeaways:

  • Arsenal made history with a 7-1 win over PSV, the first team to score seven away goals in a Champions League knockout match
  • PSV conceded five or more goals at home in a European fixture for the first time in their 112-year history
  • Arsenal secured their biggest Champions League knockout away win, surpassing a 2-0 victory over AC Milan in 2008

Arsenal delivered one of their most dominant performances on the European stage, earning a historic 7-1 victory away to PSV Eindhoven. With this result in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, Mikel Arteta’s side are in full control ahead of the return leg and are set to face either Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Arsenal became the first team to score seven goals away from home in a Champions League knockout match, achieving the feat from just eight shots on target. The win is also Arsenal’s largest away victory in a Champions League knockout tie, improving on their previous best of 2-0 against AC Milan, recorded on the same date in 2008. On the other hand, for the first time in their 112-year history, PSV conceded five or more goals at home in a European fixture.

PSV created chances but struggled defensively. Jurriën Timber opened the scoring in the 18th minute, followed by a goal from Ethan Nwaneri. Mikel Merino added a third after half an hour. PSV pulled one back through a Noa Lang penalty just before halftime.

In the second half, goals from Martin Ødegaard and Leandro Trossard ended any remaining hope for the hosts. Further strikes from Ødegaard and substitute Riccardo Calafiori completed the result.
