Erling Haaland in a battle with a Tottenham player

    Key Takeaways:

  • Erling Haaland scored the only goal in Manchester City’s 1-0 win over Tottenham
  • Haaland became the second player in Premier League history to score at least 20 goals in each of his first three seasons
  • Claudio Echeverri officially joined Manchester City and will train with the first team

Erling Haaland secured Manchester City’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham with the only goal of the match last night. The Citizens dominated the first half in North London, creating several clear chances in addition to the Norwegian’s goal. The hosts responded after the break and put City under pressure but failed to find an equaliser.

With the win, Manchester City overtook Chelsea for fourth position in the standings. Pep Guardiola’s team now has 47 points, just one behind third-placed Nottingham Forest, who played out a 0-0 draw with Arsenal. Tottenham sit in 13th spot with 33 points. Spurs have been one of City’s toughest opponents in recent years, having claimed a 4-0 victory at the Etihad in November, but this time they failed to take any points.

Haaland’s winning goal was his 20th in the Premier League this season. With this milestone, he equalled Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record, becoming only the second player in history to score at least 20 goals in each of his first three Premier League seasons. In his debut 2022/23 campaign, Haaland set a league record with 36 goals in 35 matches, followed by 27 goals in 31 games last season. This year, he has reached 20 goals in 26 league appearances.

Meanwhile, Claudio Echeverri officially joined Manchester City today. The Argentine attacking midfielder was signed in January 2024 for £12 million but remained on loan at River Plate until last month. He will now start training with the first team and will be available for Pep Guardiola.

The 19-year-old played a key role in Argentina’s run to second place at the recently concluded South American U-20 Championship. He scored six goals in nine matches, finishing as the tournament’s second-highest scorer. Echeverri’s contract with City runs until the summer of 2028. This season, he will wear the number 30 shirt.
