Juventus follow Milan and Atalanta out of the Champions League after 3-1 loss to PSV

    Key takeaways:

  • Juventus were eliminated from the Champions League playoffs after a 3-1 extra-time defeat to PSV, losing 4-3 on aggregate
  • PSV join Feyenoord in knocking out an Italian giant, following Milan’s elimination earlier in the round
  • Ryan Flamingo’s 98th-minute goal sealed the Dutch side’s place in the Round of 16, where they could face either Inter or Arsenal

Juventus became the third Italian team to be eliminated from the Champions League playoffs, as PSV secured a dramatic 3-1 extra-time victory at Philips Stadion to progress to the Round of 16 with a 4-3 aggregate win. Just like Milan, who were knocked out by Feyenoord, Juventus fell at the hands of Dutch opposition, marking a disappointing exit for the Serie A side.

PSV took the lead in the 53rd minute when Noa Lang surged forward and played in Ivan Perišić, who controlled the ball and placed it into the far corner. Juventus responded in the 63rd minute, capitalizing on a defensive mistake after a free-kick delivery. The ball fell to Timothy Weah just outside the penalty area, and the American smashed a first-time strike into the net to make it 1-1.

The Dutch side regained their advantage in the 74th minute when Perišić sent the ball into the six-yard box. Luuk de Jong flicked it on to Ismael Saibari, who finished from close range to put PSV back in front.

With the aggregate score tied at 3-3, the match went into extra time. In the 98th minute, Johan Bakayoko’s cross caused confusion between Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio and defender Federico Gatti, with the ball deflecting off Di Gregorio straight to Ryan Flamingo, who fired home to seal PSV’s victory.

PSV now advance to the Round of 16, where they could potentially face another Italian side, Inter, or Premier League club Arsenal. The draw will take place on Friday.
