    Key takeaways:

  • Plymouth, bottom of the Championship, eliminated Premier League leaders Liverpool with a 1-0 victory
  • Liverpool made ten changes to their starting lineup, fielding an experimental squad
  • Ryan Hardie’s penalty secured the shock win, with Plymouth’s goalkeeper making key late saves

Plymouth pulled off a stunning upset in the fourth round of the FA Cup, defeating Premier League leaders Liverpool 1-0 at Home Park. The Championship’s bottom-placed side capitalized on a much-changed Liverpool lineup, as Arne Slot made ten alterations from the team that recently secured a Carabao Cup final spot against Tottenham. Only goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher retained his place from that match.

Liverpool struggled throughout the game and created little going forward. Plymouth took the lead in the 53rd minute when Ryan Hardie converted a penalty. The visitors failed to respond effectively, and despite a late push, Plymouth’s goalkeeper produced two brilliant saves to deny Diogo Jota and Darwin Núñez, preserving the home side’s advantage.

With this defeat, Liverpool’s hopes of a quadruple came to an end. Plymouth, meanwhile, continued their impressive cup run after also eliminating Brentford in the previous round. Just a week earlier, Argyle had defeated West Brom, ending a 15-game winless streak in the Championship.
