Marcelo, the legendary former left-back of Real Madrid, has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The 36-year-old Brazilian, considered one of the best in his position, shared the news through a video on social media. His last club was Fluminense, where he played a key role in securing the Copa Libertadores title in 2023. However, his time with the club ended abruptly in early November following a reported altercation with coach Mano Menezes before being substituted into a match, leading to his release.

Marcelo’s greatest achievements came during his 16-year career at Real Madrid, where he played from 2007 to 2022. The Spanish giants quickly released a statement honouring the defender, who made 546 appearances, scored 38 goals, and provided 103 assists during his time in Madrid. He lifted 25 trophies with Los Blancos, including five Champions League titles, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, six La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and five Spanish Super Cups. He is the third foreign player with the most appearances for Real Madrid after Karim Benzema and Luka Modric.

On the international stage, Marcelo earned 58 caps for Brazil and scored six goals. He won the 2013 Confederations Cup and claimed a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics, in addition to a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
