Antonio Conte blocked Napoli departures, Garnacho move failed due to high salary demands

Napoli's head coach Antonio Conte and club director Giovanni Manna

    Key Takeaways:

  • Antonio Conte blocked the departures of Giacomo Raspadori and Rafa Marín due to Napoli’s failure to secure replacements
  • Napoli made a serious bid for Alejandro Garnacho, but personal terms could not be agreed upon
  • Raspadori attracted interest from Juventus, Bayern Munich, and Olympique Marseille but remained in Naples
  • Napoli planned to sell Rafa Marín to Villarreal but could not finalize a deal for Fiorentina’s Pietro Comuzzo

Napoli coach Antonio Conte intervened to prevent two outgoing transfers during the January transfer window. The club had been prepared to offload Giacomo Raspadori and Rafa Marín, but both players ultimately stayed as Napoli struggled to bring in suitable replacements. Their only late addition was Noah Okafor, who arrived on loan from AC Milan.

Meanwhile, Raspadori’s agent, Tullio Tinti, confirmed that his client had interest from several clubs but was retained as an important squad member. “Raspadori certainly wanted more playing time, but the coach made it clear that he would not let him leave. We tried to find a solution until the last moment, but it didn’t work out. Napoli are at the top of the table, and from their perspective, Giacomo remains an important alternative for their attacking midfielders. He is happy here and hopes to win another Scudetto” Tinti said. He also revealed that Juventus were closer to signing Raspadori than Bayern Munich, while Marseille had also expressed interest in the Italian forward. Napoli had also planned to sell Rafa Marín to Villarreal but first wanted to secure the signing of Pietro Comuzzo from Fiorentina. However, when that move fell through, the Spanish defender remained at the club.

Napoli also pursued a major attacking reinforcement, but their efforts to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United fell short. Club director Giovanni Manna confirmed how close the deal was: “We made an important bid to Manchester United for Garnacho, the deal was very close. We really wanted him.” However, negotiations collapsed over the player’s salary demands. “We weren’t able to agree on personal terms with Alejandro, he requested an important salary to leave in January and we must respect our players” the director added.

Napoli’s squad planning extends beyond the January transfer window, as Manna confirmed that Mathias Olivera’s contract renewal has been finalized and is set to be signed. The club is also working on extending the contracts of key players Alex Meret and Franck Zambo Anguissa. “We are also ready to proceed with Alex Meret and Franck Zambo Anguissa, no rush but we’re on it” Mnna stated.
