Barcelona inflicted a second humiliating defeat of the season on their arch-rivals Real Madrid, thrashing them 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final. The Catalans reclaimed the trophy, which they and Los Blancos have exchanged over the past four years. The match, played in Jeddah, will be remembered for its extraordinary first half.

Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring for Real Madrid after just five minutes, but the reigning champions were then overwhelmed by four consecutive Barcelona goals before half-time. Lamine Yamal equalized in the 22nd minute, followed by strikes from Robert Lewandowski (36’), Raphinha (39’), and Alejandro Balde (45+10’). The second half continued in the same vein, with Raphinha netting again in the 48th minute.

The game took a dramatic turn in the 57th minute when Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was shown a straight red card. Real Madrid’s Rodrygo pulled one goal back from the resulting free-kick in the 60th minute, but no further goals followed.

This was the first time since the autumn of 2018 that Barcelona had scored five goals against Real Madrid, a feat they achieved in a 5-1 La Liga victory. With this triumph, Barcelona remains the club with the most Spanish Super Cup titles, extending their tally to 15 compared to Real Madrid’s 13. It also marks the first trophy for new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick.
