Barcelona became the first finalist in this year’s Spanish Super Cup after defeating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 in their semifinal. The match, played at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, saw Barcelona earn a convincing victory thanks to goals from Gavi in the 17th minute and Lamine Yamal in the 53rd. Athletic responded with goals from Oscar de Marcos and Iñaki Williams, but both efforts were ruled out for offside after VAR intervention.

Athletic entered the tournament as the holders of the Copa del Rey, while Barcelona qualified by finishing second in La Liga during the 2023/2024 season. The match carried additional significance as Athletic had previously eliminated Barcelona with a dramatic 3-2 victory in the quarterfinals of last season’s Copa del Rey.

The other semifinal will take place later today, where La Liga champions Real Madrid will face Copa del Rey runners-up Mallorca. The final is set for Sunday, January 12, also in Jeddah.
