Newcastle secured their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Brentford at St. James’ Park. Just ten days ago, the Bees defeated the Magpies 4-2 in the Premier League, but this time Newcastle got their revenge in emphatic fashion.

Newcastle took the lead in the ninth minute through Sandro Tonali’s precise strike from outside Brentford’s box. Toward the end of the first half, the Italian midfielder doubled his side’s lead with an even more spectacular finish, volleying home a corner inside the box. In the 69th minute, Fabian Schär sealed the result. After the Bee’s goalkeeper Flecken parried a shot from Lewis Hall, Bruno Guimaraes picked up the loose ball and passed to Schär, who tapped it into the empty net for 3-0. In stoppage time, Wissa managed to score a consolation goal for Brentford after missing a good chance earlier in the 88th minute.

Newcastle’s manager reflected on Sandro Tonali’s journey, saying: “Sandro has faced significant challenges, including difficult moments and dark times, which likely led to self-doubt.” He added, “I like to see players rewarded for dedication, hard work and loyalty. Those things mean a lot when you see what a player has given to achieve success.”
