“Top four not the focus, Chelsea is building for the future” says Maresca

Enzo Maresca spoke ahead of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup match against Newcastle and the upcoming Premier League clash with Manchester United. The manager shared that Chelsea’s focus is long-term, rather than placing pressure on immediate top-four finishes. “The club has never mentioned anything about top four,” he stated, explaining that Chelsea’s goal is to build a strong foundation over the next four or five years. “We work every day to reach something important” he added, emphasizing a steady growth plan.

Tonight’s match against Newcastle offers Filip Jorgensen a chance in goal, but Maresca confirmed that Robert Sánchez remains the club’s number one goalkeeper, highlighting Sanchez’ reliable performances this season. Maresca praised Jorgensen’s contributions in cup competitions, saying, “Filip is doing fantastic in the Carabao Cup, the Conference League” but he stressed there is “no doubt” about Sanchez’ position.

With the weekend game against Manchester United, Maresca mentioned he’s been studying Ruud van Nistelrooy’s tactics from his time at PSV, given that the former United striker is expected to take interim charge following Erik ten Hag’s recent departure.

Maresca also addressed Jadon Sancho’s recent absence, attributing it to tactical decisions rather than performance issues. He assured, “Sancho is doing well since he arrived, he’s going to play many games. He has to continue to work hard.”
