Real Madrid boycotts Ballon d’Or ceremony after Vinicius’ snub

Real Madrid made headlines yesterday by boycotting the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, a move prompted by their star forward Vinicius Jr.’s omission from the top accolade. Citing concerns over the award’s selection process, the club argued that both Vinicius and standout defender Dani Carvajal were deserving of recognition, particularly for their Champions League final performances. Despite Real Madrid’s absence, the event went on to crown Manchester City’s Rodri as the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner.

“The Ballon d’Or was a prestigious award, until today” remarked football legend and former Real Madrid player Luis Figo, underscoring the frustration surrounding Vinicius’ exclusion.

The ceremony’s results also stirred widespread reactions from Brazilian media, fans, and players alike. Vini Jr’s omission from the top spot quickly became a point of contention, with many expressing disbelief and disappointment. Real Madrid’s decision to skip the event entirely highlighted the depth of the club’s dissatisfaction, as the snub struck a nerve not only with Vinicius’ supporters but also with the wider football community.
