Real Madrid and Andriy Lunin agree on contract extension

Real Madrid and Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin have reached an agreement on a new contract, extending his stay at the club until June 2028. Lunin’s previous deal was set to expire in June 2025, but after a strong showing last season, the club has moved to secure his future. Marca reports that the new deal will be made official soon.

Lunin enjoyed a breakout 2023/24 season, stepping up in the absence of injured starter Thibaut Courtois. Despite the arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan to provide additional cover, Lunin was trusted by Carlo Ancelotti for key fixtures, including the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Manchester City. His crucial saves during both meetings, including stopping Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic’s shots in the penalty shoot-out, helped Real Madrid advance to the final.

However, just before the Champions League final, Lunin fell ill, leading to Courtois reclaiming his spot as the starter in goal for the decisive match. Lunin has made 48 appearances in total for Los Blancos, with 31 coming during last season in which the Ukrainian goalkeeper managed to keep 12 clean sheets.
