Brazil’s World Cup Qualifying struggles continue with loss to Paraguay

Brazil’s struggles in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers continued with a 1-0 loss away to Paraguay, a result that has raised concerns over the Selecao’s form. Manager Dorival Junior started with an all-Real Madrid attacking trio of Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and Endrick, but their firepower wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.

Historically, Brazil has been dominant in World Cup qualifiers, losing just five times in 71 matches from 2003 to 2022. However, the current side has now lost four of their eight games for the 2026 World Cup, a stark contrast to their usual standards. Their offensive struggles are also evident, with Brazil managing to score more than one goal in just one of their last seven matches and only three times across their previous 15 outings.

These statistics are concerning for a squad that boasts some of the world’s top attacking talent. Vinicius Jr., who is in the running for the 2024 Ballon d’Or, alongside fellow Real Madrid stars Rodrygo and Endrick, have yet to translate their club form to the national team. The Selecao’s roster also includes talents like Barcelona’s Raphinha and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, making the current struggles even more perplexing.

Brazil now sits in fifth place in the CONMEBOL standings with 10 points from eight matches, leaving them with much work to do to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
