Free agent Mats Hummels close to joining Real Sociedad

Mats Hummels is nearing a move to Real Sociedad, as the experienced defender works hard with a personal training regimen to prepare for his next challenge. Sources close to the player confirm that he is focused on staying in top physical condition and is ready to compete at the highest level. If negotiations go smoothly, Hummels is expected to sign a one-year contract with Real Sociedad until 2025, with an option to extend for an additional season. Hummels left Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer after his contract expired. Last season he helped BVB reach the Champions League final, where they lost 2:0 to Real Madrid.

Real Sociedad have leapfrogged Mallorca and Brighton who were also credited with interest in the German defender, and are now favourite to secure Hummels’ signature. The 35-year-old center-back will bring valuable experience and leadership to the Basque side as they look to strengthen their defence for the current season.

In addition to the anticipated signing of Hummels, Real Sociedad is also involved in negotiations to sell midfielder Mikel Merino to Arsenal. The club is expected to finalize the deal soon, with Merino likely to move to the Premier League, as covered in previous articles.

Real Sociedad’s 2024/25 LaLiga campaign has had a mixed start. They began the season with a disappointing 1-2 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano but bounced back on Saturday with a hard-fought 1-0 victory away at Espanyol. Takefusa Kubo, who had not scored since February, came off the bench in the 66th minute and hit the decisive goal in the 80th minute, securing three crucial points for his team.
