Ian Maatsen signs for Aston Villa, Omari Kellman heads to Chelsea in multiple deals between clubs

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, marking a significant addition to their squad for the upcoming season. The Dutch wing-back completed his medical in the Dutch national team camp and has agreed to a six-year deal with Villa, keeping him at the club until June 2030. Chelsea will receive a £37.5 million fee for the transfer.

In a separate deal, Omari Kellyman joins Chelsea from Aston Villa, further highlighting the active transfer dealings between the clubs. Official confirmation has also been received for Aston Villa’s signing of Lewis Dobbin from Everton, with Tim Iroegbunam moving in the opposite direction.

This signing is part of a busy transfer window for Aston Villa, who have also secured the services of Lewis Dobbin from Everton for £10 million, Samuel Iling Jr for £9.3 million, Enzo Barrenechea for £9.3 million, and Ross Barkley for £5 million.

Maatsen began the 2023/24 season with Chelsea before being sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund in January. During his stint with the German club, he reached the Champions League final. Although Borussia Dortmund were keen to retain him, Aston Villa moved quickly to finalize the deal.

The 22-year-old Maatsen is currently with the Netherlands national team at Euro 2024, having been called up to replace an injured player after initially missing out on the Oranje’s squad. He has yet to make his debut for the Netherlands, remaining an unused substitute in the team’s opening two games of the tournament.

Aston Villa’s proactive approach in the transfer market underscores their ambitions for the upcoming season, with Ian Maatsen’s addition expected to bolster their defensive options significantly. The club finished in 4th position in the Premier League last term, securing participation in the Champions League.
