On a historical night at Anfield Road, Atalanta defeated Liverpool with the score of 0:3. The loss put an end to Jurgen Klopp’s team unbeaten home run of 415 days and 34 matches. Gianluca Scamacca was the hero for Atalanta, becoming the first Italian player to score a brace at Anfield with his goals coming in the 38th and 60th minutes of the game. Croatian midfielder Mario Pasalic rounded off the score with a strike in the 83th minute.

The loss comes as another blow for Liverpool’s ambitions to send Klopp by winning all possible trophies. Last weekend the Reds dropped points away to Manchester United in the Premier League title race and have been overtaken by Arsenal.
With the win at Anfield, Atalanta joins the elite company of Real Madrid and Barcelona as the only three teams to have won multiple European away games against Liverpool. Remarkably, Gian Piero Gasperini is the first manager to achieve this against Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool, showing Atalanta’s strength in European competitions.
Despite the big lead, Atalanta should not feel comfortable ahead of the return leg at Gewiss Stadium in a week time. Their previous victory at Anfield was in 2020 in the Champions League group stage with the score of 0:2, and it was achieved just two weeks after losing 0:5 at home to that very same Liverpool team.
