Only a matter of time before Antoine Griezmann eclipses Luis Aragones as Atletico Madrid’s record goalscorer

The French forward joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2014 in a 30 million deal from Real Sociedad. He needed 364 games for the club to equal the club’s record of 173 goals held by Luis Aragones. Griezmann reached that historical achievement on Tuesday, when scoring a brace in a thrilling 3:3 draw against Getafe. He will have the chance to better it before the turn of the year, as Atletico will face Sevilla on Saturday in a postponed match of LaLiga’s 4th round.

Griezmann has won three trophies during his time in Madrid. The Spanish Super Cup in 2014/15, UEFA Europa League in 2017/18 and UEFA Super Cup in 2018. He has been part of Atletico Madrid for the past 9 years, with a quick break between 2019 and 2021 when he tried his luck with Barcelona. Even though Atleti received a record 120 million from the Catalan side back then, the fans were particularly unhappy with the forward’s decision to switch alliences and were vocal in their protests. Griezmann spent 2 years with Barca before returning to Atleti initially on loan and then on a permanent transfer.

Griezmann’s 173 goals for Atletico Madrid have arrived in 4 different competitions:
La Liga: 123 goals
Copa del Rey: 13 goals
UEFA Champions League: 31 goals
UEFA Europa League: 6 goals

In a recent interview Griezmann stated that he is ready to remain in the Spanish capital if the club needs him.
