US Online Betting Market Statistics

US Online Betting Market Stats - Size and Market GrowthWagering on sports has become a popular form of entertainment in many parts of the globe, and the US is not an exception. That being said, wagering on sports has a complex history in the US and a decade-long court battle ultimately deemed such activities legal. The sports betting market in the US began thriving in 2018 after the Supreme Court lifted the ban on sports betting and gave state governments a free hand to set their policies on the matter.

While more than half of the states already opened the door for gambling expansion, there are still territories whose authorities maintain a rather illiberal stance on gambling activities.

The total number of states to legalize betting on sports was recently brought to 33 after Vermont and North Carolina allowed betting on such events. Four more states are expected to launch their programs very soon too. As the US sports betting industry is booming, proceeds are pouring in, and New Jersey continues to sit atop the leaderboard in terms of handle and revenue. Nevada, on the other hand, is touted as one of the leading states for wagering on sports, and as of 2021, the number of sportsbooks available there was reported to be 126.
The online sports betting industry appears to be poised for rapid growth, and it is therefore not surprising that more and more operators fight for market share.

The online gambling market in the US is growing at an unseen speed and this is due to many factors, including the advancement in technology, increasing digitalization, and the growing trust in sports betting operators. The improved Internet connectivity and proliferation of handheld devices have also fueled the growth of the industry. Sports betting operators are also on the search for innovative and attention-grabbing features that should make the punters’ experience all the more exciting.

Although the online sports betting market sees unprecedented growth, the industry still faces various challenges, including regulatory uncertainty. The growing concerns about problem gambling and the increasing need for improved cybersecurity measures are also on the list of challenges the industry is up against.

States Where Sports Betting Is Legal Stats

States Where Sports Betting Is Legal StatsThe Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was enacted in 1992 and its aim was to prevent states from allowing wagering on college and professional sports.

The prohibition outside the state of Nevada persisted for decades, and this led to the proliferation of illegal sports betting. Following a 2018 Supreme Court decision, sports betting was legalized in a number of states, and just a year later, the emerging industry was already thriving. Following the post-PASPA era, sports betting quickly started sprouting out like a weed and continues to make its way to new states all the time.

In 2023, the sports betting industry in the US is heading into its sixth year of regulated operations, and betting sites continue to battle for market share. Today, legal wagering on sports has spread over more than 30 states across the US, including the District of Columbia, and new states and new states are expected to launch their markets very soon. In Nebraska, Maine, and Kentucky, enabling legislation is already put on the table for consideration.
  • According to information presented in 2019 by the American Gaming Association, since the fall of PASPA in May 2018, American bettors have staked more than $10 billion.

Offshore Online Betting in the US Statistics

Offshore Online Betting in the US StatisticsIllegal sports betting has been in place and booming in the US for years, and such sports betting platforms continue to attract the interest of Americans even after the ban was overturned. Online betting is now thriving in many states across the US, and new ones are added to the roster of territories where such activities are allowed quite often. Although illegal sports betting is booming and lots of money is passing through illegal channels, the legal US sports betting market is on its pace for expansion and unseen growth.

  • According to an analysis made by the American Gaming Association, the illegal sports betting industry in the US is estimated at $150 billion.
  • The prevalence of illegal wagering on sports still remains widespread in the US, and Americans are reported to place more than $63 billion in illegal sports bets each year. According to the report presented by the American Gaming Association, Americans stake this amount with offshore bookies and sportsbooks that operate illegally in the country every year.
  • Due to the proliferation of illegal sports betting, sportsbooks that are authorized to operate in the US are reported to lose $3.8 billion in revenue.
  • The lost tax revenue for states is estimated to be $700 million.
  • According to the findings of the American Gaming Association, illegal sports betting is most prevalent in southern states, and figures go to prove this. When southern states are concerned, the handle of illegal sports betting is estimated to be worth $29.5 billion. The midwestern states came in second as the handle of illegal betting on sports stood at $17 billion. • Another survey conducted by the Fantasy Sports & Gaming Association (FSGA.) found that the share of people who do not know that they are placing bets on sports illegally is even higher and estimated to exceed 80%. • According to an analysis made by Google, the interest offshore sportsbooks attract is three times higher than the search activity legal sportsbooks garner in the US. Yet, when states like Indiana, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey are concerned, this tendency is flipped, which is natural, considering that their sports betting markets are more mature. According to the available data, in states where sports betting is legal, the searches for regulated sportsbooks are more than 3x higher than the searches for sports betting platforms that operate without a license.
  • A survey conducted in 2021 shows that Americans who live in states where there is still a ban on sports betting are less likely to engage in such activities. The share of residents of such states who say they never place bets on sports exceeds 80%.
